At Brent’s Place it so special that you get to bond with families that are going through similar situations as your family. I can say that my family and I made some lifelong friends at Brent’s from the staff to families that were there while we were there.
17 year old, Kayla Romero, and her family lived at Brent’s Place for 183 days. During that time she graduated from high school with honors, completed numerous puzzles, and baked over a thousand cupcakes. Kayla is doing well and is currently living life as a college student, studying to become a nurse practitioner and spending time with her family and friends. In Kayla’s own words…
“Where to begin, through my cancer journey, Brent’s Place has been one of the most amazing foundations that has helped me and my family on this roller coaster ride. My mom, 9 year old sister and I stayed at Brent’s Place for roughly seven months in 2013 and it could not have been more of a blessing.
First of all the facilities are amazing and for someone like me who hates hospitals its perfect because they are clean the way that you need them to be healthy, but it is not a hospital. The staff members are some of the most wonderful people that I have had the privilege to get to know. They are always willing to lend a hand or just sit there and listen if that’s what you need. My family and I especially enjoyed all the activities that go on down stairs. While we were there my little sister would actually memorize the monthly calendar and she made us attend almost every activity (especially arts and crafts). Still to this day when we go back for check up’s if we are there during any monthly activity we have to make it down stairs on time.
One of the things I always looked forward to while we were there was meal days. I was always very excited to see what the wonderful volunteers would be cooking up because it was always something different and sometimes it was something that we had never tried before. I’m sure sometimes we drove the staff just a little bit crazy because we were always down stairs and we were always making them plenty of cupcakes but they were always good sports about it and they would always try our cupcakes and tell us how they could be improved.
Many days or even some nights some of us older kids would get together and have a ping- pong tournament even though I wasn’t very good at that it was always a lot of fun because it gave us all something to do. At Brent’s Place it so special that you get to bond with families that are going through similar situations as your family. I can say that my family and I made some lifelong friends at Brent’s from the staff to families that were there while we were there.
I will forever be grateful to Brent’s Place for all that they have done for my family and me. If there is one thing I can say about Brent’s Place after staying there and becoming so familiar with the place is that you somehow someway become one BIG family.”
